PEACE WORK AS DREAM WORKTM
Dreamwork & Conflict Transformation
Dreams speak the language of symbol and metaphor. They reflect our inborn creativity and deepest truths and can help us access our inherent capacity to face life’s problems. Dreams tap into our deeper consciousness, accessing insights beyond the purely rational mind. At a moment when much of the world seems to defy logic, dreamwork can be a powerful tool for navigating uncertain and unprecedented times.
Peace Work as Dream WorkTM uses projective group dreamwork to analyze conflicts (from interpersonal to international) as waking dreams. We impose limitations in the real world that we don’t in dreams. When working a conflict as a waking dream we can break the rules of waking life and allow ourselves to imagine new possibilities and create new approaches. The process can help identify archetypal patterns – recognizing what story is being played out or what narratives are being embraced by conflict actors and parties – and help identify and cultivate conditions for intractable conflicts to ripen.
The approach was born out of 20+ years working in international diplomacy and with Jungian-based modalities (archetypes and dreamwork). Peace Work as Dream WorkTM is at the same time grounded in conflict resolution theory and intensely practical. The material was forged in the fire of managing conflict inside and outside of government.
Aimee Breslow is a Certified Dream Work Facilitator with the Marin Institute for Projective Dream Work, and an Affiliated Scholar at the Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, at the University of San Diego. Her research explores conflict transformation at the intersection of politics, psychology, and spirit.
